Introduction

Flying Egg

Egg Drop

Project Title

Egg Drop

Duration

After the project has been approved, ready for marketing within 16 months; ready for production within 18 months

DETAILS

You will create a toy in the form of a "vehicle" which will protect a raw egg from breaking when the egg (together with the vehicle) is dropped from a height of minimum 7 metres.

Drop

  • The total weight of the vehicle will not be more than 500 grams (egg not included).
  • There will be
    • no parachutes,
    • no balloons or any similar inflatable objects,
    • no cloth, paper or plastic cushions.
  • There should be at least one moving part - such as a propeller, a moving tail, a rotating top/bottom - to make the toy attractive, as well as to aid the child in using his/her imagination to build similar or better mechanisms.
  • The mechanism should be designed in such a way that the child can assemble the mechanism on his/her own (therefore, the simpler the better).
  • You can use paper, wood, plastic and/or metal; the constructed vehicle should be strong enough so that
    • it can protect the egg from breaking and
    • it can remain intact and can be used again and again.
  • Preferably, the vehicle should be easy to clean in case an egg should get broken.

Group Work

You will design and build a prototype for this project in a group. After you design your project, you will (for the rest of this course):

  1. submit your project to ToiToi by means of a formal proposal; once your proposal has been accepted, you will

  2. work in your group and finalise the details, make corrections and amendments on your initial project,

  3. send regular progress reports to the company officials,

  4. complete the project and build a prototype,

  5. invite company officials - especially the marketing department staff - to a meeting,

  6. promote your project within the institution by means of a poster you will design,

  7. and give a group presentation
